Chile  and Australia  clash at the Panatanal Arena in Cuiaba on Saturday morning (AEST) in their Group B opening match.

On paper, this is seems to be the game Australia can get a result from, but don’t be fooled – Chile are a force to be reckoned with and are just as capable of embarrassing the Socceroos as the other teams in their group. The South Americans, well, play like South Americans. They are an attacking minded side which can score a lot of goals and Ange Postecoglou will have his eyes fixed on their main attacking threat, Alexis Sanchez. The Barcelona striker netted 21 times in 54 appearences this season, with another 15 assists to his name to go with it. Sanchez though, may have it all to do himself, with attacking midfielder Aturo Vidal ruled out through injury. The Juventus number 23 hasn’t trained with the national side all week due to an inflamed knee and reports suggest he might be cut from the whole tournament, if team doctors can’t quicken the healing process.

Australia can take a lot of positives out of their 1-0  loss to Croatia last weekend and will fancy they can upset Chile in their neighbour’s backyard. Midfielder and captain Mile Jedinak got through 70 minutes and is expected to be at full fitness come Saturday morning. The Crystal Palace man has been recovering from a groin strain and he will be an influential figure in the Socceroos midfield. There remains an injury cloud hovering over veteran Mark Bresciano. He continues to fight off a lower back problem. The tournament in Brazil will be Bresciano’s third consecutive World Cup, one of two only players left from the ‘Golden Generation’ to feature in the side.

Although Chile don’t boast the big names such as Spain and the Netherlands, Ange Postecoglou will know they are just as talented. The attacking flair Jorge Sampaloi’s side possess is one to be feared and the Socceroos will need to be at their best if they are to get a result.
