A Carlton  side in blistering form is in Brisbane this weekend to tackle the Lions on Saturday afternoon at the Gabba.

The Lions players have profited from a bye last week and it couldn’t have come soon enough after losing their three prior games by an average margin of 58 points. This week they regain a mixture of experience and class with vice-captain Tom Rockliff and dual best and fairest winner Joel Paltful returning after missing the pre-bye fixture against the Roos with a gastro bug. Talented youngster Sam Mayes will also slot into the line-up after he also missed the North Melbourne clash after being concussed in a training incident.

With four wins from their past five matches, Carlton is looking to continue their positive run. With no points on the board after round four, Mick Malthouse’s men have turned their season around and the Blues can mathematically work their way into the top eight with a big win this weekend. Vice-captain Andrew Carrazzo got through a VFL match problem free last week and could mark his return this weekend from a back injury that’s kept him out since round five. Chris Judd remains a game or two away from an AFL match as he continues to battle a hamstring injury, but he could make an appearance in the VFL this weekend – remarkably it would be just the second state-league game of his career.

Carlton look like a totally different side in recent weeks to the one in the opening weeks. The Blues are on a bit of a run now and if they can continue to win without Judd, you just wonder how competitive they’re going to be when the champion midfielder returns. The Lions will put up a pretty decent challenge and won’t be easy beats like in recent weeks, but the Blues should prove to classy for the hosts.
