Maroon Leaders - Cam Smith v Wally Lewis

On the back of the 2014 Queensland State of Origin team being announced, skipper Cameron Smith is being compared to “The King”, Wally Lewis. The passion and control of the game Cam Smith has are reminiscent of Lewis, but the stats speak for themselves:

King Wally
Games: 37 (30 as captain) from 1980 – 1991
Tries: 10
Goals: 2
Series won: 9

Cam Smith
Games: 30 (9 as captain) from 2003 – present
Tries: 4
Goals: 16
Series won: 8

Smith, like Lewis, is playing during a maroon dynasty. He has Billy Slater, while Wally had Colin Scott. Smith has Greg Inglis, Wally had Mal Meninga. Smith has Jonathan Thurston, Wally, well he was Thurston, (and he had Alfie Langer). The list goes on and on. Only time will tell if Lewis will ever be surpassed as the 'greatest Queenslander' in origin footy, but he is “The King” for a reason.

In the meantime, Smith will lead Queensland is pursuit of a ninth straight series victory.
