Both sides boast talented young midfields and their clash will be a highlight when the Queensland Firebirds host the Melbourne Vixens at the Brisbane Entertainment and Convention Centre tonight. Even this early in the ANZ Netball Championship, the Vixens are chasing revenge after a round three fade-out a few weeks ago.
On that occasion, the pre-season title favourites led at every change and by six in the last quarter only to go down 48-47 at Hisense Arena. Now the Vixens are in the Firebirds back yard and in the middle of a road trip which began with a 67-43 victory over the Tactix in Christchurch last Monday and finishes in Sydney against the NSW Swifts next Sunday.
Both teams are 3 & 2, sitting in the top four. As usual, the homeside will rely heavily on shooting maestro Romelda Aiken, who was the difference last time. Diamonds’ captain Laura Geitz will also have plenty of influence, leading a robust backline which was sensational in the round 3 victory. The young midfield is also starting to click as Verity Simmons build a strong combination with Kim Ravaillion.
While the crowd will be vocal and a plus for the Firebirds, homecourt advantage hasn't always been the case when these two sides clash. In fact, six of the past seven encounters have been won by the visitors.
