For a man who has had to fight for everything in his life, Alex Leapai  is no stranger to overcoming the odds. But on Sunday, he faces his biggest challenge yet, attempting to become Australia’s first wold heavyweight boxing champion. To do so, he has to take down the man known as “The Steel Hammer”, Wladimir Klitschko .

The Alex Leapai's story is one of redemption; one of strength; one of faith. Known as “Lionheart” to many, Leapai has attributed his success to ‘the man upstairs’, having discovered his faith while serving a prison sentence for assault. Leapai has come from nowhere to challenge the champ, beating Russian Denis Boytsov in what was a major upset.

Dubbed by many as the greatest boxer of all time, Klitschko has been a dominant force in heavyweight boxing for the better part of a decade. His footwork, speed and strength have seen him unify all four heavyweight championships in spectacular fashion. The Ukrainian comes into Sunday’s clash having won nineteen straight, eleven by knockout, and second on the all-time list for most heavyweight title fights (22-2).

Both fighters have been training the house down in preparation for the fight. Klitschko, the self-proclaimed ‘strongest boxer in the world’, has spent the past month training in the Austrian Alps against three amateur boxers, all who resemble Leapai in size. Leapai has been sparring with giant Romanian Razvan Cojanu, whose size and technique is similar to that of Klitschko.

With his brutal power, Leapai has said he wants to turn the fight into a slug-fest, hoping to take the champ apart. Unfazed, Klitschko has replied that he will go toe-to-toe with the Samoan powerhouse, opting not to use his height and reach advantage. Whether he sticks to those plans is a different story.

With both man focused on the prize at hand, expect this one to be one to remember.
