Lance Franklin and Kurt Tippett will be a feared combination this season. Image courtesy of foxsports.com.au/News Limited
There was no shortage of attention on Lance Franklin’s move to Sydney during the trade period, but footy fans will have to wait another week to see him in the red and white after he was left out of the Swans team to take on cross-town rival GWS in the teams’ first NAB Challenge match of 2014. The year before it was Kurt Tippett’s arrival from Adelaide commanding plenty of attention, but he, too, will also watch from the sidelines as he recovers from a knee injury.
There is mixed news when it comes to the Giants’ forward line. Former number one draft pick Jonathon Patton will play after coming back from a knee reconstruction, while established key forward Jeremy Cameron will also line up, in what was meant to be the club’s one-two punch over its first two AFL seasons. Tom Boyd joined the mix for forward line spots this season after he was also taken with the first selection in the 2013 draft, it will be another week before we see him in Giants colours.
The Giants have added plenty of experience to its core of young players, including former Swans Shane Mumford and Jed Lamb. Throw the likes of Heath Shaw, Josh Hunt and Dylan Addison in to the mix, and GWS definitely has a more solid look than its previous seasons. Sydney has handed debuts to former Blue Jeremy Laidler and ex-Richmond ruckman Tom Derickx.
