Old enemies Manchester United  and Liverpool  do battle in Round 3 of the League Cup on Thursday morning (AEST), with both sides looking to bounce back from disappointing results on the weekend.

Robin Van Persie could figure at Old Trafford after sitting out United’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City with a groin strain on the weekend, as boss David Moyes tries to invigorate a side that was convincingly outplayed in the derby. Jonny Evans, Tom Cleverley and Javier Hernandez will all come into contention for a start after starting on the bench at Etihad Stadium. The Red Devils have won just three of their past four domestic fixtures, with a 2-0  victory over Crystal Palace sandwiched between defeats at City and Liverpool and a draw  at home to Chelsea.

Liverpool suffered its first defeat of the new campaign after going down to Southampton at Anfield on Saturday and will be looking to bounce back to form at the earliest possible opportunity. Luis Suarez could come straight into the starting XI having completed his 10 match suspension for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in April, while manager Brendan Rodgers will also hope to have Daniel Agger available after the defender was substituted after taking a knock to his ribs. Jose Enrique is expected to start after coming off the bench against the Saints.

Liverpool scored its first victory over United since Brendan Rogers took charge when winning 1-0  at Anfield in the Premier League earlier this month and will be confident of backing that result up with another success against their fierce rivals away from home.
