Darren Weir’s import Puissance De Lune has been installed as the early favourite in TattsBet’s opening market for the 2013 Melbourne Cup, having won six of his nine starts since landing in Australia. The powerful grey is following in the footsteps of 2012 Cup hero Green Moon , who won the 3200m race after racing just once in the Autumn, when winning the Group 2 Blamey Stakes over a mile. Puissance De Lune took in the same contest at his only start to date in 2013, deadheating for first with Budriguez and is much better suited over more ground. He showed his staying prowess by smashing his rivals by five lengths in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2600m at the end of last year’s Melbourne Cup carnival, a race that Makybe Diva famously won twelve months before the first of her three Cup victories.
Fiorente finished second in the $6.2 million contest at his first start for Gai Waterhouse last November and will be looking to go one better this time around, while 2012 fifth Mount Athos is another horse being prepared for another crack at the race that stops the nation. Luca Cumani’s gelding will spearhead another strong international contingent that could contain 2011 runner-up Red Cadeaux . Australian Derby winner It’s A Dundeel could run in the race after the Cox Plate, while last year’s winning owner Lloyd Williams will rely on the likes of Sea Moon and Seville .
