Daniel Geale will be out to improve his record to 30-1 when he defends his IBF middleweight title against Briton Darren Barker this weekend. Since claiming the belt from Sebastian Sylvester in Germany two years ago, the Tasmanian has seen off four challengers for the title, winning by decision on each occasion. The last time that he was seen in the ring – against Anthony Mundine at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in January – ‘The Real Deal’ won unanimously on points to make amends for his defeat to Mundine in 2009, which remains the only blemish on his record.
‘Dazzling’ Darren Barker will be taking a huge step up in class when he faces Geale at the Revel Resort, after fighting far lesser credentialed boxers in his two bouts since being stopped in the 11th round by Sergio Martinez at Atlantic City 22 months ago. After beating up on soft domestic and European opponents for most of his career, Barker was found out against Argentine Marquez and could well meet the same fate against Australia’s champion.
