Cate Campbell will be bidding for her first individual gold medal at a major international event when she contests the 100m Freestyle Final at the World Championships in Barcelona on Saturday morning (AEST). The 21 year old was part of the 4x100m freestyle team that won gold at the London Olympics twelve months ago but has emerged as a star in the individual event over two laps this year, stopping the clock in a world leading time of 52.33secs in the first leg of the Women’s 4x100m freestyle relay on the opening night of competition.
Despite boasting several of the fastest times in the world this year, Campbell was only the second fastest qualifier after Swede Sarah Sjostrom won the second semi-final in a time of 52.87secs. London gold medallist Ranomi Kromowidjojo qualified in third while American teenager Missy Franklin goes for her fifth gold medal of the championships after winning the first semi-final.
Sally Foster goes for gold in the Women’s 200m Breaststroke final, while the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle relay team will bid to better its fifth at the Olympics last year.
