Sabine Lisicki and Marion Bartoli will meet in the Women’s Singles Final at Wimbledon on Saturday night (AEST), with both players looking for their first grand slam title.
Since scoring a shock win over world number one Serena Williams in the 4th round, Lisicki has been the tournament favourite but hasn’t had an easy passage to the finale. The world number 24 beat 14th seed Sam Stosur prior to her victory over Williams, and scored a hard fought three set win over 2012 runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska in the last four. After taking the opening stanza 6-4, the big serving German dropped the second before finally overcoming his Polish opponent 9-7 in the third set.
If Lisicki has had a tricky route to this stage of the tournament, Bartoli has had anything but that, with the French woman yet to face anyone ranked in the top sixteen. She took just 62 minutes to get past 20th seed Kirsten Flipkens in the semi-final on Thursday night, dropping just three games in the process to maintain her record of not dropping a set at SW19 this year.
This pair have met four times on the WTA Tour, with Lisicki holding a three one advantage despite being the lower ranked player. The most recent clash took place here at Wimbledon two years ago in the quarter-finals with the hard hitting German winning in three sets . Their only other grass court showdown also took place at the All-England club, with Bartoli winning in straight sets on the opening day of Lisicki’s first appearance at the event.
While the 23rd seeded German has the power to blast her opponent off the court, she has spent nearly two hours more than Bartoli on the court in the past four rounds, who will try to see how much she still has in the tank.
