Victoria Derby Day Racing Preview

Coolmore Stud Stakes (MR4) – Zoustar showed plenty of promise at the Brisbane Winter Carnival but has emerged as the best sprinter of his generation with strong wins in the Golden Rose and Roman Consul Stakes at his past two starts and is clearly the one to beat here. He is yet to race down the straight but has five wins from seven career starts and is clearly the one to beat. Fillies have a tremendous record in this event, having had a winner and two minor placegetters from the past four runners in the race and Missy Longstocking and Thump both look to be leading chances following strong wins last time out. Lion Of Belfort and Sidestep can both be competitive.
Selections: Zoustar , Missy Longstocking , Thump , Sidestep

Mackinnon Stakes (MR5) – Jet Away needs to win this to get into the Melbourne Cup and looks well placed back to 2000m third up from a spell. Despite missing a couple of races early in his campaign, the David Hayes trained galloper ran big races in both the Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Cup, making him the horse to beat here. The winner of this race has come through the Cox Plate eight times in the past 13 years and Side Glance is the only runner backing up from that race. He wasn’t disgraced when sixth last week and can improve on that effort. The form of Pakal’s Cranbourne Cup victory has worked out well and he looks up to this grade, while Solzhenitsyn warrants respect at his first attempt over 2000m following his second Toorak Handicap win.
Selections: Jet Away , Side Glance , Pakal , Solzhenitsyn

Victoria Derby (MR6) – The Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick has provided three of the past four Derby winners and that contest again looks to be the key guide here, with Complacent and Savvy Nature coming through the race. Complacent defeated Savvy Nature and Criterion over 2000m there and can confirm his superiority over an additional 500m. He has three consecutive wins now, while Savvy Nature has franked the form by winning the Vase at Moonee Valley easily last Saturday. The Norman Robinson is the other major leadup race for the Derby and Polanski was a good winner of that event, while Honey Steel’s Gold will appreciate the step up in trip and is the best roughie.
Selections: Complacent , Savvy Nature , Honey Steel’s Gold , Polanski

Myer Classic (MR7) – Four of the past five renewals of this contest have been won by Sydney trained mares and that record could continue this weekend, with Chris Waller holding the key to the race. He saddles up favourite Red Tracer, who won the Tristarc last time out, but it is stablemate Catkins that is of more interest. The grey mare has the right profile for this race, having won the Tesio Stakes at Moonee Valley last week at her first attempt over a mile. This is a big step up in grade for Zonza and Molto Bene but both look up to the task, while Fire Up Fifi will run well after a strong victory at Flemington two starts back.
Selections: Catkins , Red Tracer , Zonza , Fire Up Fifi
