Queensland champion Buffering will again carry the topweight of 58kg in the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm on June 8 after the final field for the race was declared on Wednesday. The Rob Heathcote trained five year-old clocked up his eighth placing at the top level with his 3rd in the Doomben 10,000 and has run in the 1400m Stradbroke twice before for a 2nd and a 4th.
Darley’s impressive 10,000 winner Epaulette will have to set a modern day weight carrying record if he is to score for the third time in Group One company after being given the impost of 56kg for the June 8 feature, which carries a $1 million purse for the winner. The most weight that a three year-old has carried to victory in the past three decades is the 51.5kg that Daybreak Lover had when successful in 1984 and he must also overcome a wide gate after drawing poorly in barrier 22.
Even with Epaulette facing a tough task at the weights, the classic generation is still well represented in the event with well drawn BTC Cup winner Your Song set to carry 54kg. Emerging star Better Than Ready will have just 52.5kg on his back, while Queensland Guineas winner Sizzling looks well in at the weights with just 52kg.
