Local runners haven’t fared too well in the South Australian Derby in recent times, but Hioctdane  will be out to change that when he lines up in the race on Saturday. Rebel Raider (2009) is the only winner of the race since 2007 to have been trained in the state as a series of interstate trainers have taken home the spoils from the $500,000 event. The Richard Jolly trained galloper scored an effortless victory by more than four lengths in the tradition Derby leadup, the Chairmans, last weekend to emerge as the horse to beat in the 2500m staying contest.

Victorian runners are expected to fare well again having taken the race with Zabeelionaire twelve months and Alister Clark winner Hvasstan  and Shoreham , who was successful in the Galilee Final at Flemington last month appear to be the leading contenders from that region. Gerontius  was a fast finishing fourth in the ATC Derby behind It’s A Dundeel and should find this much easier.
