Randwick Group One Preview April 13

Sires Produce Stakes (SR5) – Last week’s brilliant Golden Slipper winner Overreach  will be bidding to become the eighth winner of this race for Gai Waterhouse since Assertive Lad was successful in 2000 when she lines up as a red-hot favourite. She is clearly the one to beat based on her three easy wins this preparation. Guelph  ran on strongly to finish fourth a week ago at her first run for six weeks and should be improved for that hitout. Trainer Gerald Ryan has a big opinion of Charlie Boy  and the horse could run a big race here having finally drawn a good gate after getting too far back from an awkward alley in the Slipper. Havana  will appreciate the step up in trip after finishing strongly at his last start over 1200m and could run well at big odds.
Selections: Overreach, Guelph, Charlie Boy, Havana

Australian Derby (SR7) – With VRC Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar ruled out of the race, Kiwi galloper It’s A Dundeel  appears to have this contest at his mercy. He was a dominant winner of both the Rosehill and Randwick Guineas and it is hard to see anything that finished behind him in those races beating him home. Philippi  has won four of his seven starts and was a dominant winner of the Tulloch Stakes last week, powering through the line to suggest that he will relish a step up to 2400m. The Waterhouse stable is flying at the moment and they will be represented by Hippopus , who was also doing his best work late when running into 2nd in the Tulloch Stakes. He is likely to dictate the pace and try to run the favourite off his feet. Hvasstan  was a strong winner of the Alister Clark at Moonee Valley two starts back before flopping in the Rosehill Guineas but can be excused for that flop on his first attempt the Sydney way of going.
Selections: It’s A Dundeel, Philippi, Hvasstan, Hippopus

TJ Smith Stakes (SR9) **TattsBet $50,000 First4 Jackpot** - Superstar mare Black Caviar  will be looking to extend her unbeaten record to 25 races when she faces 10 rivals in the final race of the day at Randwick. Although this is the toughest field that she has met in some time, it is impossible to find a chink in her armour and she should simply be too good for the others. Rain Affair  ran second in this twelve months ago and will again put up a bold showing from the front and will appreciate any given in the track. Bel Sprinter  was brilliant in coming from last to claim the Group One Galaxy by more than three lengths two weeks ago and looks certain to be in the finish if replicating that performance. Three year-old Epaulette  has good form around Pierro and All Too Hard and can run a big race first up from a spell.
Selections: Black Caviar, Rain Affair, Bel Sprinter, Epaulette
