It has been some time since the Brisbane Lions threatened to win an AFL trophy, but Michael Voss’s side is a genuine chance of moving in to the NAB Cup final next weekend after collecting wins in its first three matches of the tournament. It would be Brisbane’s first night or pre-season premiership, but first they have to get past a Collingwood outfit which also has an unbeaten record.
Both teams were on the road last weekend; Brisbane struggled to shake off a youthful Greater Western Sydney outfit in Wagga, while the ‘Pies made light work of the Eagles in Perth. Both teams are well and truly ahead of North Melbourne which sits in fourth place, and whichever side wins is all but guaranteed a spot in the decider.
With plenty on the line at Etihad Stadium, Brisbane is set to unleash its big guns on the Magpies, including the biggest of them all, co-captain Jonathan Brown. The power forward is having his first run of the pre-season, while vice-captain Daniel Rich and reigning Club Champion Joel Patfull have also been included.
Nathan Buckley appears to have half an eye on round 1 with the likes of Dane Swan, Scott Pendlebury and Travis Cloke all missing from the ‘Pies squad for this match. Collingwood has won four of the last five against Brisbane and completely dominated the match at the ‘Gabba last year winning by 58 points.
