Eleven time world champion Kelly Slater will be looking to win his fifth Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach when the iconic event begins in Victoria this week. The 41 year-old, who won the event for the first time in 1994, proved why he is one of the best surfers in history by starting the season with a win at the Gold Coast Pro at the start of March.
The American veteran, whose first season on the ASP World Tour was 22 years ago, defeated Joel Parkinson in the final of the season opening event and ‘Parko’ is another man that will be confident of success at Bells. The reigning world champion has tasted success here on three previous occasions, with his most recent win coming in 2011. Fellow Gold Coast board rider Mick Fanning is the defending champion here having beaten Slater in the final.
Young Hawaiian Dusty Payne warmed up for this contest by taking out the Margaret River Pro on March 24, while 2007 winner Taj Burrow can put himself back in the spotlight with another victory.
