Australian fast bowler Ryan Harris will play his first match of the season for the Queensland Bulls when he lines up against the Victoria Bushrangers in the Ryobi Cup at the MCG on Saturday. The 12 Test veteran has been plagued by injuries throughout his career and has taken a long time to return to full fitness since undergoing shoulder surgery in August.
Harris is not the only new face in the Queensland squad following the Bulls 110 run defeat to Western Australia at the Gabba on February 2, with Joe Burns, Cameron Boyce, Alister McDermott and Ben Cutting all unavailable after being selected to represent Australia ‘A’ against the England Lions. Norths left-hander Dominic Michael and Toombul quick Ronan McDonald are in the squad for the first time, while Luke Pomersbach will continue his return to the state setup, lining up in his third consecutive match in the competition.
The Bushrangers have also been hit by international call-ups, with four players in the Test squad in India and Aaron Finch and John Hastings with the ‘A’ team. Simon Helmot can still call on plenty of other experienced players however, with former Australian ODI representatives Cameron White and David Hussey in his side. Former asylum seeker Fawad Ahmed gets another chance to impress after taking 3/47 against South Australia last weekend.
Victoria can ensure they finish on top of the table and earn the right to host the Ryobi Cup final at the end of the month with a victory, while Queensland still has a slim chance of making the decider following South Australia’s defeat to New South Wales on Thursday. Victoria won by 190 runs when these teams met at the Gabba in October.
