Despite being anchored at the bottom of the A-League ladder, Melbourne Heart loves nothing more than stepping up to give Melbourne Victory a run for its money in a Melbourne derby. Fresh from a poor 2-1 loss to Sydney FC, which was perfectly summed up by Harry Kewell’s embarrassing penalty attempt, the boys from Yarraside will be keen to ease the pressure on gaffer John Aloisi.
Going on current form, Heart might be in further trouble, having not beaten the Victory in their last three meetings and yet to notch up a win so far this season. In contrast, Kevin Muscat and his troops are finally starting to convert their dominance of possession in to goals and Mitch Nichols is controlling the midfield. Nichols has the ability to rip apart a fragile Heart defensive line with pin point passes and will no doubt service the returning Archie Thompson nicely to create plenty of chances. Thompson will further bolster the Victory’s attacking stocks, which includes the on fire James Troisi , who has scored 6 goals in 10 matches so far this season.
Heart’s best performance of the season came in the opening round when it held Victory to a scoreless draw . The stats show Aloisi’s side has the worst attack and defence in the competition heading in to this match. In its 2-0 win over Perth last week, Victory had 23 shots on goal; if they have anywhere near that many on Saturday night, this could be a blowout.
