Brisbane has had a soft start to the A-League which has contributed to Mike Mulvey’s side finding itself on top of the table after four rounds. Roar gets a real litmus test on Sunday, though, when it heads to Gosford for a battle with reigning premier Central Coast.

The Mariners are unbeaten this campaign, but have collected just six points from four starts. Twice they have come back from two-goal deficits on the road against Melbourne Heart and Newcastle, but a 1-0 victory at Bluetongue Stadium at the end of October is the team’s only win.

Brisbane was poor against Heart in the first half at Suncorp Stadium last week but the men in orange came out a different side in the second stanza running out 3-0 winners. Defender Jade North injured his groin in the dying stages of that match and he’ll join Besart Berisha (hamstring), Shane Stefanutto (hamstring) and Liam Miller (calf) on the sidelines for this encounter. North will be replaced by talented young backman James Donachie, who is yet to see A-League action so far this season. Star striker Daniel McBreen returns for Central Coast after a loan spell in China, but they will miss New Zealand internationals Michael McGlinchey and Storm Roux.

Roar dominated this match-up in the first few seasons of the A-League with Central Coast failing to record a single victory in the teams’ first 13 contests. The Mariners hit back last campaign winning both matches in Gosford. They’ve lost just one game at Bluetongue Stadium since the start of last season, while Brisbane has failed to score in four of its past seven away games.
