It’s hard to believe a team which has beaten Arsenal and Manchester City this season could be sitting in 14th place, but that’s where Paul Lambert and Aston Villa find themselves ten games in. Villa hasn’t managed a goal since they dismissed City 3-2 at the end of September, which means they’ve gone 375 minutes without finding the back of the net in the Premier League. Never before has the Birmingham side gone five straight premiership fixtures without a goal.
Villa has some sort of weaponary up front with the likes of Christian Benteke, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann but a mix of luck and ineptitude with the ball and injuries have conspired against them. Agbonlahor (ankle) and Weimann (hamstring) are doubtful for Sunday morning’s (AEST) match with Cardiff City while defenders Antonio Luna (hamstring) and Joe Bennett (back) are also out.
Cardiff has been equally as bad in front of goal. The Welsh side has slotted just nine goals in ten games, but it has picked up four points in the past two weeks with a scoreless draw away to Norwich and then a 1-0 victory in the derby clash with Swansea thanks to Steven Caulker’s winner. Craig Bellamy hasn’t scored this year, but he has found the back of the net on his last two trips to Villa Park.
