Just a couple of weeks after the thoroughbred version, the fastest dogs in Australia will line up over 515 metres at Sandown Park in the Melbourne Cup. Black Magic Opal is the standout dog in the field and drew ideally in two for Thursday night’s race. In his last four races he has set track records at Geelong and Warrnambool and last week in his Melbourne Cup heat he broke the first sectional record at Sandown Park.

Black Magic Opal set the fastest heat time last week clocking 29.41 for the trip but the Jason Thompson-trained runner will face three others in the field tonight who have set better marks over this distance. He has been unplaced just three times in 32 starts but each of those occasions was in a 515-metre race or longer.

Shifty Sticka appears to be Black Magic Opal’s main rival. He cruised through to the final with an impressive heat win last week and has placed in all 19 of his races with 11 victories to his credit. Kiss Me Ketut in box four has plenty of early speed, while Iona Seven will need plenty of luck coming out of the pink box, but the bitch has won two from two from the widest box in the past 12 months.
