Bernard Tomic has hardly been in sparkling form in the second half of the year, but on Tuesday night (AEST) he comes up against another player who hasn’t been able to put together back-to-back wins of late in the form of big-serving Frenchman Jeremy Chardy .
After winning both singles rubbers on clay in the Davis Cup tie with Poland three weeks back, Tomic hasn’t been able to build on that momentum on hardcourt on the Asian swing of the ATP Tour. He was the beneficiary of Ivo Karlovic’s retirement in the first round in Bangkok before going down 6-4 7-5 to Gilles Simon. He then came up against another roadblock in Beijing when beaten in the second round by Richard Gasquet 7-6 6-4 who has continued to build on his outstanding run at the US Open where he reached the semi-finals.
Chardy started the year well with a quarter-final appearance at Melbourne Park, but things have gone steadily downhill from there. He hasn’t won two straight matches since he reached the third round at Wimbledon. Last week he had to watch on as Milos Raonic sent down 17 aces in a 6-4 6-3 defeat in Tokyo.
Tomic and Chardy have met just once before on tour with the Australian taking out their first round clash at his home Slam in straight sets .
