Two months back Mikhail Youzhny ended Lleyton Hewitt’s dream run at Flushing Meadows in five-set thriller; on Tuesday night (AEST) he takes on another Australian in the form of the wildly inconsistent Bernard Tomic in the first round at Valencia.

These players met at the same time last year with Youzhny dominating Tomic recording a 6-0 6-2 win in Basel on an indoor hardcourt. They meet again with a closed roof, although neither player has set the world on fire during the indoor season.

Tomic has lost his past two first rounders to Jeremy Chardy in Shanghai and an ordinary defeat against unheralded American Jack Sock in Stockholm. Youzhny has suffered the same fate, although he was forced to retire against Pablo Andujar in Shanghai with a stomach ailment.

Youzhny has a good record on indoor hardcourt with four of his ten career victories coming on the surface and an overall 58-25 record. Tomic has nowhere near the experience or success in the fast and still conditions with a 7-13 win-loss tally.
