Feature Race Preview January 26

John Dillon Stakes (MR6) – Lightly race five year-old British General will be bidding for his fourth straight win in this race after claiming his first black type success in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes at Flemington last time out. All three wins have come over this trip and he still appears to be improving, but faces a tough task at the weights. Dash For Viz was less than half a length behind him last time out and meets British General 2.5kg better off at the weights. It’s Crunch Time disappointed as favourite last time out but is sure to get a good run from barrier one and should relish a step up in trip from 1000m on breeding. Highly Recommended is good on his day and could run better dropping back from 2000m and returning to his home track, particularly if is rain affected.
Selections: Dash For Viz, British General, It’s Crunch Time, Highly Recommended

Australia Day Cup (SR6) **TattsBet $81,655 Trifecta Jackpot** – Gai Waterhouse has three runners in this event and they all appear to have good chances. Reuben Percival resumed from a two month break by finishing second in the Gosford Cup under a big weight and will have come on for that run. His second in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup is good enough for a race like this. Despite finishing down the track here with 60kg on his reappearance at the start of the year, Tullamore can improve considerably with the jump to 2400m here. He won the Brisbane Cup and was a Caulfield Cup over this trip in 2011.Travolta has looked a progressive stayer and wasn’t disgraced in finishing third at Gosford last time out, but is untested over this trip. Darley pair Yulalona and Angelus warrant respect.
Selections: Reuben Percival, Tullamore, Angelus, Travolta

Sunshine Coast Cup (QR6) – There doesn’t appear to be a great deal of pace in this race and Fillydelphia could get across relatively easily from gate seven and control the speed. If the Rob Heathcote trained mare can do that, she will be very hard to beat despite having to give weight away to her rivals. The daughter of Bianconi finished was only narrowly beaten in the Bernborough Handicap last time out and will find this much easier. Double Impact should get a dream run from the inside gate and finished second in the Sunshine Coast Guineas here last June on a wet track, and is at his best with some give underfoot. Gundy Son and Delago Pilli would be good chances if the pace is on.
Selections: Fillydelphia, Gundy Son, Double Impact, Delago Pilli
