World number nine Sam Stosur  will be looking to put a mediocre opening day performance behind her when she takes on 2010 semi-finalist Jie Zheng  in the 2nd round of the Australian Open on Wednesday. The Queenslander made a poor start to the new season, bowing out of the Brisbane International and Sydney International in the first round but scored her maiden win of 2013 by defeating Kai-Chen Chang of Chinese Taipei in straight sets  7-6 6-3 on Monday. Zheng will present a much tougher challenge however, having knocked the 28 year-old out of the APIA International in Sydney last week.

Zheng, who has a career high ranking of 15, laboured past compatriot Yuxuan Zhang in three sets  on Monday but will take confidence from her win over Stosur at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre last week. After taking the first set 6-3 in that match, Zheng then dropped the second and was forced to dig deep before triumphing 6-4 in the final stanza to improve her record against Stosur to 2-3 after the Australian had won the previous two meetings between the pair.

Stosur has started slowly in each of her matches this season and will need to get out of the blocks quickly against her Chinese opponent to give herself the best possible chance of advancing to the 3rd round of her home ‘Slam’. She dropped the opening stanza against both Zheng in Sydney and her first round conqueror Sofia Arvidsson in Brisbane before being taken to a tiebreak in the first set against her little known opponent at Melbourne Park.

On four of the five occasions that these two have locked horns, the match has gone to a third and deciding set and there is every chance that this match could go the distance as well .
