Magic Millions Preview January 12

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (QR5) – Driefontein and No Looking Back were first and second in the 2YO Classic here last year and there is every chance that they will fight out the finish of this event as well. The Gai Waterhouse pair – together with Group One winner Sizzling - are rated much higher than the rest of the field, and will be hard to beat from good draws. Preference is for No Looking Back in this race after she produced a big performance to beat older horses in the Carrington Stakes on her seasonal reappearance. She was poorly weighted in that contest but looks much better suited here, where she gets good weight relief from her two market rivals. Driefontein needs to bounce back from a below performance when she was second as $1.10 favourite at Wyong but is capable of doing so, while Sizzling will be hard to hold out but will need plenty of luck and a masterful ride from Craig Williams to come from back in the field on the tight Gold Coast circuit. Platinum State and Saluter have been running well and are capable of being in the finish.
Selections: No Looking Back, Sizzling, Driefontein, Platinum State

Magic Millions 2YO Classic (QR6) – Fillies have dominated this event in recent times, with 16 of the 18 most recent placegetters, and that trend could be set to continue with Assail clearly the one to beat in this year’s renewal. The Clarry Conners trained filly has won both of her starts to date and was ultra-impressive when scoring a three length win in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO race in December, when she led all the way after having to work hard to get to the front from a wide gate. Clevadude was pressing for favouritism before the barrier draw but his chances appear to have nosedived after coming up with barrier 18. Despite the fact that he has impressed with easy wins at both of his visits to the track, the past six winners have all drawn a single figure gate. Missy Longstocking has won four from four and should get a good run from gate five, while Real Surreal couldn’t have won any more easily at Eagle Farm last week. I’m Too Sexy ran terribly in the McClachlan Stakes behind Missy Longstocking last time out but would be in the mix if she can reproduce the form that saw her win the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic by three lengths at Ballarat.
Selections: Assail, Real Surreal, Clevadude, I’m Too Sexy

Magic Millions Cup (QR7) – Steel Zip will be hard to beat in this race having finished an admirable 2nd to Biggles here in the Goldmarket on New Year’s Day after suffering a setback in the leadup to the race. That run will have brought him on and he also meets his last start conqueror 1.5kg better off. Biggles is racing in career best form and will be in the firing line at the finish again, while Doncaster 5th Fast Clip will run a bold race first up from a spell. Stratford and Celtic Dancer both race very well here and warrant respect, although the latter is much better with some give in the ground.
Selections: Steel Zip, Fast Clip, Biggles, Stratford
