Group One Railway Stakes winner Mr Moet can rewrite the record books by winning the Perth Cup at Ascot on New Year’s Day with an impost of 59kg. The Adam Durrant trained five year-old has won five of his past six starts and is clearly the best performed galloper in the field, but no winner of the race has carried more than 55.5kg to victory since Artesian was first past the post with 9 stone 7 pounds (60.3kg) in 1913. Mr Moet defied his long odds to win the Railway Stakes over a mile first up from a spell, before finishing second to Luckygray in the Kingston Town and then landing the Cox Stakes over 2100m.
Bjorn Baker’s Cantonese has won six of his past eight in Sydney, including the Christmas Cup at Rosehill at his last start but has drawn the second widest gate in barrier 19, while Global Flirt and WA St Leger winner Pop Culture are also in the market. Grant Williams has four runners in the field, including Ranger and 2010 Cup winner Lords Ransom .
