Five time US Open champion Roger Federer faces a potential banana skin in the quarter finals at Flushing Meadows, with the Swiss ace set to face Tomas Berdych on Thursday morning (AEST). Despite holding an 11-4 career advantage over the Czech, the world number one has won only three of the past six meetings between the pair. Two of those have come on hardcourt’s, Berdych also upset Federer in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon two years ago on his way to the final. When they last met - in the final of the Madrid Masters in May - Federer fought back to win in three sets after Berdych took the first 6-3.
Top seed Federer has been in ominous form at Flushing Meadows and is yet to drop a set in the tournament, having won his opening three matches in straight sets before having a walkover in the fourth round after Mardy Fish withdrew for medical reasons. Sixth seed Berdych defeated 11th seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro in straight sets earlier in the week to advance to the last eight.
Briton Andy Murray takes on 12th seed Marin Cilic in the day’s other quarter-final match in the Men’s draw, while there are also last eight matches from the Women’s draw. Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci lock horns in an All-Italian affair, while crowd favourite Serena Williams takes on Ana Ivanovic .
