Manchester City will be looking for their first win in four matches when they welcome Aston Villa to Etihad Stadium on Wednesday morning (AEST). The Premier League champions were held to a second straight 1-1 draw in the League at the weekend after suffering a 3-2 defeat away to Real Madrid in the Champions League earlier in the week, but will be confident of turning their fortunes around against the struggling Villans. The Birmingham based club has collected just four points from its opening five league fixtures but beat Tranmere 3-0 in the previous round of the Cup.
With Roberto Mancini’s focus on a Champions League campaign and their Premier League defence, the Citizens are likely to make full use of their strong squad in this competition, although Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli are likely to start up front. Former City midfielder Stephen Ireland will not face his former teammates after suffering a suspected broken up in his sides 4-1 defeat to Southampton on Saturday but Chris Herd and Fabian Delph could return after recovering from injuries.
Having won it five times, Aston Villa has the second best record of any club in this competition but has struggled against Manchester City in recent times. Villa’s 1-0 win over City in January last year was the clubs only success in the past eight meetings between the pair, with the Sky Blues victorious in six of those matches.
There are several other Round 3 matches scheduled for the day, with unbeaten Premier League leaders Chelsea hosting Championships club Wolves and West Ham and Wigan meeting in an all Premier League clash.
