NFL Heavyweights Face Off

A 32-yard missed field goal was all that separated Baltimore and New England in last season’s playoffs. Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff missed the three-pointer, which would have sent the game in to overtime. Baltimore lost its chance to go to the Superbowl, while Cundiff lost his job.

It was the Patriots with kicking problems of their own last weekend, when Stephen Gostkowski badly missed a 42-yarder in the dying seconds of a 20-18 home loss to Arizona. That defeat left the AFC champion 1-1, but more concerning was the fact Tom Brady and the rest of the Pats offence couldn’t find the end zone until Rob Gronkowski scored with two minutes left in the game.

The Ravens have problems of their own. Their normally watertight defence allowed more yards against Philadelphia last weekend than it has in any match since 1998. Joe Flacco and the offence weren’t much better.

The Ravens haven’t lost back-to-back games since a three-game losing run in 2009. The Patriots haven’t been 1-2 since the 2001 season when Tom Brady became New England’s starting quarterback. Something has to give this weekend.
