Ocean Park has stamped himself as a genuine contender for the spring riches in Melbourne following a strong win in the group one Makfi Challenge Stakes in New Zealand. The Gary Hennessey galloper claimed the 1400m feature event at Hastings by half a length and will now make the trip across the Tasman with connections likely to target the 2040m Cox Plate at Moonee Valley rather than the Caulfield Cup over an additional 400m. Ocean Park showed promise in a two race Sydney campaign earlier in the year, with a luckless eighth in the Randwick Guineas followed by a second placing in the Rosehill Guineas.
Sincero enhanced his claims for the Cox Plate by winning the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield, while unbeaten Golden Slipper Pierro made a pleasing reappearance with his victory in the Run To The Roses at Rosehill. His effortless win saw his price slashed for the both the Cox Plate ($7 into $5) and the Caulfield Guineas ($3.40 into $2).
2011 Caulfield Cup runner-up Green Moon showed that his is on course to go one better this year with a slashing reappearance run in the Memsie Stakes where he was a fast finishing fifth, while Glencadam Gold continued his progression to that race with a Listed win in Sydney. Confirmation that Patinack filly Nechita will contest the Golden Rose saw her rocket to the top of the market for that race ($5.50 into $2.80), while Kabayan and Your Song are also headed towards that event following big runs at the weekend.
