Last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden  will again be one of the headline acts at this year’s spring carnival, after connections announced that he would return to Australia in a bid to become just the sixth horse to win the race twice. Prior to that however, the six year-old son of Nicobar will line up in the Caulfield Cup, where he is likely to carry top weight. Having initially been set for a tilt at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, connections decided to return to Australia instead after Dunaden failed to win any of his four starts in the Northern hemisphere this year.

2011 Caulfield Cup heroine Southern Speed  has firmed ($26 into $17) for this year’s renewal of the race on the back of her win in the Penny Edition Stakes at Morphetville, where she came from a long way back to win by three lengths. Lamasery  was another big firmer after running home strongly in the Warwick Stakes ($81 into $41).

Patinack filly Nechita  and Commanding Jewel , closely related to unbeaten mare Atlantic Jewel, took their career records to two wins from as many starts at Warwick Farm and Moonee Valley respectively, and dominate the market for the Thousand Guineas.
