Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing 3-0 defeat to West Brom on the opening day of the new English Premier League season when they welcome champions Manchester City to Anfield. The Reds got things back on track with a 1-0 win over Hearts in the Europa League playoffs on Thursday night and will welcome a host of big names back into the squad after they didn’t make the trip to Scotland for that match. Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez and Martin Skrtel are all set return, while manager Brendan Rogers will give striker Andy Carroll until the last minute to prove his fitness after a hamstring twinge.
City got their title defence off to the best possible start with a 3-2 victory over promoted club Southampton last weekend, but were made to work hard for the win and only scored the winner in the 80th minute. That result came at a cost however, with striker Sergio Aguero suffering a knee injury that is set to keep him sidelined for a month, while Micah Richards and Gareth Barry are also out of contention for this match.
The corresponding match between these sides last season ended 1-1.
