Regal Roller Stakes (MR5)
– Moment Of Change is probably the best horse in this race based on his strong autumn form in Sydney around the likes of Manawanui but won’t be seen to best effect on the likely heavy going. On class alone he has to be the top pick however. Instinction was a good winner over course and distance first up from a spell during his last preparation and warrants respect. He has won three of his nine career starts and being so lightly raced, is open to further improvement. Freereturn has race fitness on his side, won well at Moonee Valley two weeks ago and handles a wet track, while Launay is capable of running well fresh although he doesn’t appear to be particularly well weighted.
Selections: Moment Of Change, Instinction, Freereturn, Launay
P.B Lawrence Stakes (MR6)
– West Australian galloper Luckygray heads to Melbourne with a very impressive record (10 wins from 13 starts) and looks a good chance to add to it here. Already a Group one winner in Perth, he shapes as a potential top liner and is sure to run well in this contest, despite being untested on the mud. Ready To Rip is one horse that will definitely appreciate give in the ground, having won five of his nine starts on slow or heavy tracks. He has won both of his starts since being switched to Peter Moody’s stable and is the obvious danger. Rekindled Interest is very good on his day and will be running on strongly at the finish, while Prince Obama and Second Effort are other noted mudlarks.
Selections: Luckygray, Rekindled Interest, Ready To Rip, Second Effort
Cockram Stakes (MR7)
– Hi Belle looks a decent eachway option from the inside gate here, in what appears to be a very open contest. She races well on a wet track, is relatively well in at the weights and has run well fresh in the past. Craig Williams will give her every chance from barrier one and appeals at double figure odds. Glows has strong group form from the autumn and made a pleasing reappearance at Moonee Valley a fortnight ago, while Avoid Lightning is another in form mare. The South Australian raider has won all four starts this preparation but is untested over 1200m and this is a big step up in class. Lady Melksham has appeared very progressive in her four start career and is more than capable of winning, while Booklet and Lucky Penny can rule well fresh.
Selections: Hi Belle, Glows, Booklet, Lucky Penny
Open Handicap (MR8)
– Streets Away was a good winner over this trip at Moonee Valley a fortnight ago and looks well placed to claim a second win in three starts for new handler Darren Weir. He is yet to miss a place from five runs on heavy tracks and will get a perfect run from the inside draw. Forty Thirty has been racing consistently well and can be expected to be in the finish again, while the same can be said of Oregon Spirit. Eruptious is a smart stayer in the making and despite the fact that this is likely to be too short, will be running on strongly off the back of two recent trials.
Selections: Streets Away, Forty Thirty, Eruptious, Oregon Spirit
