Two new faces appear in the Socceroos squad that will face Scotland in Edinburgh on Thursday morning (AEST), with Jason Davidson (Heracles Almelo) and fellow defender Ryan McGowan (Hearts) earning maiden call ups to the national team. With Australia’s World Cup qualifying campaign resuming when they face Jordan next month, coach Holger Osieck is likely to give Davison and McGowan, as well as other fringe players, an opportunity to press their case for selection in those matches.
Although Australia hasn’t played a game since June, they have failed to flatter recently, with drawn matches against Japan and Oman in World Cup qualifiers coming after a friendly defeat to Denmark two months ago. Scotland has faced similar struggles of late however, having been thrashed 5-1 by the United States in their last outing.
There have been four previous meetings between these sides, with Scotland winning twice and Australia once, while the other game ended in a draw . The most recent clash was in 2000, when Brett Emerton and David Zdrilic goals were enough to secure a 2-0 win for the Socceroos at Hampden Park.
Roy Hodgson has named a youthful England squad for their clash with Italy in Switzerland, while Germany and Argentina do battle in one of the other feature matches.
