Former premiership favourites Carlton  meet reigning premiers Geelong  in a crucial AFL Round 11 clash at Etihad Stadium on Friday night. Despite losing three of their past four matches, the Blues still find themselves seventh on the ladder, one place ahead of Geelong, who has clawed its way back into the final’s positions courtesy of wins over the Western Bulldogs and GWS in the past fortnight.

Where It Will be Won – Given that both of these teams boast impressive midfields, it has hard to believe that the Blues and Cats have both struggled to win contested possession and clearances. Carlton were outdone in these crucial areas by thirteenth placed Port Adelaide last weekend, while Geelong have won the hard ball count just once all year. With the likes of Chris Judd  and Bryce Gibbs  coming up against Joel Selwood  and in the in-form Steve Johnson , the battle in the middle of the field will be one to savour and whoever can win it will have a big say in determining the outcome of the match.

Prediction – With all their hard work at the start of the season being undone, this really is a must win game for Carlton or they could see their season unravel. They will be thankful that they are facing the Cats at Etihad Stadium and not the MCG, given Geelong has won just two of their past four fixtures at the ground. With a couple of key inclusions to their side, the Blues should just about be too good. Carlton1-39
