The ACT Brumbies can go a long way to wrapping up the Australian conference and securing a berth in the Super Rugby finals by defeating the Qld Reds in Canberra on Saturday night. Jake White’s side has been the surprise packet of this year’s competition, with their young squad having won seven of their eleven matches so far. Currently eight points ahead of the Reds in the Australian conference, the Brumbies would be virtually assured of winning top the standing at the end of the regular season if they can win against the defending champions.
Despite a crippling injury list to key position players, the ACT scored a remarkable 37-25 come-from-behind win against the Hurricanes in Welllington last week to show that they are still a force to be reckoned with. Zack Holmes will continue at flyhalf after collecting 22 points in his run on debut, while impressive young flanker Michael Hooper is free to play after avoiding suspension for a dangerous tackle in last week’s game.
The Reds will be hoping that valuable utility back Ben Lucas will be available after suffering a groin injury in his side’s 34-20 victory over the Lions on Saturday night. His inclusion is vitally important for the Reds in this must win clash, with star playmaker Quade Cooper having played just 40 minutes since returning from a serious knee injury.
When these sides met at Suncorp Stadium earlier in the season, the Reds ran out 20-13 winners in a hard fought contest.
