The Dragons and Rabbitohs will both be without some key personnel when they meet at WIN Jubilee Oval on Sunday afternoon. The hosts go into the match without New South Wales representatives Ben Creagh and Trent Merrin, while Nathan Fien and Michael Weyman are both out after suffering injuries in their sides 13-12 golden point loss to the Panthers on Monday night. Jamie Soward, a late withdrawal from that match, has been named to return.
Souths are coming off the bye but have won four of their past five matches. They will have to do it without Greg Inglis and Dave Taylor this week however, with the pair called up for State Of Origin duty with Queensland. Nathan Merritt starts at fullback, while Sam Burgess has been named to start in the second row.
– St George Illawarra has had the wood over Souths since the club was formed, winning fourteen of the eighteen clashes between the sides. Souths did win the most recent match however, triumphing 34-24 in round 21 last season.
– Former New South Wales representative Matt Cooper’s form hasn’t been anywhere near what is was this time twelve months ago. In this absence of several experienced players the Dragons need their older players to lift and Cooper will want to improve what he has done so far this season.
Nathan Merritt is one of the most dangerous finishers in the NRL and with Greg Inglis on Origin duty, gets another chance in the number one jersey. He will make the Dragons pay if they give him any space.
– Souths are flying at the moment and although the absence of Inglis and Taylor is a big blow for them, they have the personnel to cover for their absence, while the injury hit Dragons squad depth is being severely tested. Rabbitohs 1-12
