The PGA Tour moves to Florida this week, where 144 of the world’s best golfers will contest the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. The ‘Players’ carries the biggest purse of any golf tournament on the calendar with US$9.5 million on offer, including US$1.71 million for the winner. With so much at stake, it is no wonder that the event is widely regarded as the ‘fifth major’ and draws such a strong field.
World number one Rory McIlroy heads the strong list of nominations and proved himself to be in good form when losing in a playoff last week. Tiger Woods is slowly getting back to his best and will be competitive in an event that he won way back in 2001, while 2011 victor KJ Choi , Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia are amongst other former winners set to tee off on Thursday night (AEST).
Australia’s charge will be led by 2004 winner Adam Scott , 2010 runner-up Robert Allenby and young gun Jason Day , who finished tied for sixth twelve months ago to be the highest placed Australian alongside Aaron Baddeley .
