Cronulla v St George
Last season this game would have been a non-event, however in six months is a long time in rugby league and the Sharks have turned themselves around under Shane Flanagan. Sharks skipper Paul Gallen has been an inspiration and it seems the shire boys are thriving under his leadership. St George put in a gutsy performance in last week’s loss coming from a 24-0 halftime deficit to narrowly go down against the Broncos.
History – St George have had the wood over Cronulla in recent seasons recording five wins from their past six clashes. The Dragons thumped the Sharks in Round 19 last season registering an emphatic 38-8 victory however it was a different story in round 2 with the sharks taking the spoils 16-10 at home.
Dangermen - Sharks flyer Nathan Gardner has had a quiet start to the 2012 season however it is only a matter of time before he asserts his attacking ability on the Sharks title tilt. Without a doubt St George fullback Brett Morris is one of the form players of the competition. Morris has reminded NSW selector’s week in week out of his claims for a Blues jersey.
Prediction – It’s hard to go past the Sharks at home here. Toyota Park has become somewhat a fortress in recent season and Paul Gallen’s boys should get the job done in a hard fought gruling encounter. Sharks 1-12
Titans v Roosters
Gold Coast skipper Scott Prince returned from injury last week against the Bulldogs and inspired his team to a gutsy second half performance against the Bulldogs. The Titans will need every inch of Prince magic if they are to contain a much bigger Roosters outfit at Skilled Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Roosters certainly boast some firepower upfront with hard hitting Kiwi international Jared Waerea-Hargreaves getting the better of his opponents in recent weeks.
History – Surprisingly the Titans have the better record here recording five wins from eight games against the boys from Bondi. John Cartwright’s side got the better of the Roosters last season recording a solid 24-13 win thanks to a double from fullback William Zillman.
Dangermen – The Titans get star winger David Mead back this week after suffering a broken jaw in their opening win against the Cowboys. Mead will add some much needed attack to a flailing Titans backline. Shaun Kenny-Dowall showed glimpses of form last weekend against the Warrioirs that points to signs he is playing himself back into form after being injured for the majority of 2011.
Prediction – Star Titans recruit Jamal Idris is expected to return from a hamstring injury. Idris adds a lot more potency to the Titans attack and if he plays the Titans should win. Titans 1-12
