Super Saturday at Flemington

Flemington stages its ‘Super Saturday’ meeting this weekend, with every race a black type event. The undoubted highlights however are the Group one Newmarket handicap and Australian Cup.

Twenty-three horses have accepted for the Newmarket, with the weights headed by Hay List , who has to carry 58.5kg. Boom Sydney sprinter Rain Affair  is on 55.5kg, alongside Doomben 10,000 winner Beaded  and Oakleigh Plate hero Woorim . Many have suggested that Bel Sprinter  was unlucky in that race and he only has to carry 52.5kg in this contest, half a kilo less than his Bobbie Lewis conqueror Lone Rock . John O’Shea’s impressive three year old Foxwedge  gets his chance off the minimum weight of 50kg.

The Australian Cup is the second group one contest on the card and brings a crack field of middle distance horses together, headed by 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain . 2007 Cup winner Efficient  is also in the lineup, as is last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed . German import Lucas Cranach  is one of the leading fancies following his win in the Peter Young Stakes two weeks ago, while Glass Harmonium  won the Group one MacKinnon Stakes over course and distance on Derby day. Bart Cummings has won the race on thirteen occasions and will be represented by Illo  and Precedence .
