Carlton  and Richmond  face off at the MCG on Thursday night as the first game of the 2012 premiership season is played in Melbourne. The pre-season form of the respective clubs has been a big talking point going into this match, with Carlton losing all five of their matches while Richmond claimed the scalps of Hawthorn and Geelong.

Where It Will be Won – If the Tigers midfield can compete with the Blues players in the middle of the park, they will be in with a great chance of springing the first upset of the season. Chris Judd  and Marc Murphy  are amongst the best in the business and Richmond must ensure they don’t get too much of the ball. Dustin Martin , Trent Cotchin  and co have shown glimpses of brilliance but must be more consistent if they want to match it with the best sides.

Prediction – Carlton gave Richmond a 103 point thrashing in the last meeting between these sides in round 15 last year to take their winning streak against the Tigers to seven matches. The Blues preseason form was very ordinary however and with star midfielder Chris Judd still not at his peak following shoulder surgery, may struggle against the Tigers. Richmond 1-39
