Exactly how important this match is will only be known after the Central Coast Mariners play Wellington Phoenix on Saturday afternoon. If the Mariners don’t win on Saturday night, a Brisbane Roar win would be enough to see them finish the season on the top of the ladder. There could possibly be as much at stake for the Gold Coast who will be determined to avoid the wooden spoon. If Adelaide loses to Melbourne, a win would be enough to ensure the Gold Coast don’t finish bottom.
The Gold Coast will be without several important players for this match, including Steve Pantelidis and Ben Halloran. Only Luke Brattan and Rocky Visconte are unavailable for Brisbane, but they could rest players with an eye towards next week’s finals and their Champions League campaign if the Mariners have already sealed top spot.
These teams have met twice already this season for a win each. Brisbane triumphed 3-0 when they met at Suncorp Stadium in October, before United got revenge with a 1-0 win on Boxing Day.
