After opening the season with four straight wins, the Highlanders  are sitting atop the Super Rugby table a month into the competition. They have claimed some notable scalps in that time as well, with wins over the Crusaders, Waratahs, Chiefs and Hurricanes leaving them as the only side to have had four victories in 2012.

The Stormers  are also unbeaten, but have played only three times, having had the bye in week three. Defending champions QLD Reds  lead the Australian conference despite going down to the Sharks on the weekend. The Crusaders  have started the season with a win and two defeats, but are still considered one of the leading chances with All Black stars Richie McCaw and Dan Carter still to return after missing the start of the campaign.
