The New England Patriots  go into Super Bowl XLVI on Monday morning (AEST) as marginal favourites to defeat the New York Giants . The Patriots finished the regular season with the best record in the AFC conference, having won thirteen and lost just three of their sixteen matches. Their path through the playoffs was plotted with an effortless 45-10 win over the Denver Broncos before edging past the Baltimore Ravens 23-20 in the AFC Championship match.

While the Patriots have been one of the teams to beat in the NFL since the beginning of the season, the Giants made hard work of even getting to the playoffs. They had to win their last two regular season games to top the NFC East division with a 9-7 record. Since then, they have been imperious, beating the Atlanta Falcons 24-2 in the wildcard playoffs, before shocking defending champions Green Bay 37-20 the following week. Their place in the decider was then sealed with a 20-17 triumph over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game a fortnight ago.

These teams have plenty of recent history, having met in Super Bowl XLII four years ago. On that occasion, the Giants were three point victors , registering a 17-14 triumph on the back of a great effort from MVP Eli Manning . His opposite number, Tom Brady , is no stranger to match winning performances on the biggest stage, having collected the honour in two of the three Super Bowl wins that he has been involved in.

When the sides clashed in New England during week nine of the regular season, the Giants won 24-20.
