Despite fielding a completely different XI to that which took the field for the Test series, it was the same old story in the first t20 International on Wednesday, with Australia easily accounting for India . The hosts 31 run win made it five wins from as many matches against their much vaunted opponents this summer and the tourists really look like they don’t want to be here.
Matthew Wade and David Warner set up the win with a 38 run opening partnership inside the first four overs, which included an audacious reverse slog/sweep from Warner that went for six. Wade went on to top score with 72 and was ably supported by David Hussey’s rapid fire 42. Brett Lee got a vital early breakthrough in India’s reply when he had Virender Sehwag caught behind and they were never able to recover.
Skipper MS Dhoni offered the only resistance for the visitors with an unbeaten 48 but he lacked support from the rest of the batsman. Short format specialists Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma failed to flatter in their first international outing of the summer, but can be expected to improve for the time in the middle.
Australia has played four t20 Internationals at the MCG and has won each of them. They faced India here four years ago and registered a comfortable nine wicket win after bowling the visitors out for just 74. Last year, they defeated England by four runs here in a thrilling match that went down to the final over.
