Champions League Heats Up

Internazionale can support their claim as Champions League contenders with with a win over Marseille on Thursday morning. Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan has dismissed any concerns over his fitness ahead of his teams must win Round of 16 match. Inter were on an eight-game winning streak before a recent form reversal has seen them lose five of their last six outings, culminating in last week’s embarrassing 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Bologona in the Italian Serie A.

Inters’ Champions’ League group stage form was less than convincing losing two matches and only scoring eight goals while conceding seven. The Claudio Ranieri coached side will need to sharpen their attack if they are a chance of securing a third consecutive UEFA Champions League quarter finals berth.

Marseille too, losing two of their group matches and scoring seven goals yet have been solid in defence only conceding four goals. Ghanaian striker Amdre Ayew has been a sensation for the French side scoring three goals including a match winning double in the first group match against Dortmund. The two clubs first met in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup with Marseille triumphant 1-0 .

Swiss team Basel meet 2010 Champions League runners-up Bayern Munich in Thursday mornings other Round of 16 match. German striker Mario Gomez has been a revelation for Munich scoring seven Champions League goals this campaign.
