Adelaide United will be bidding to bounce back to form when it welcomes Melbourne Victory to Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday night, following a 2-1 defeat to competition leaders Central Coast in round nine. Victory stretched its unbeaten run to five matches however, with a hard fought 1-0 win over Perth at AAMI Stadium.
After occupying top spot on the ladder, Adelaide dropped to second with last week’s loss at Bluetongue Stadium when they were overrun after taking an early lead. The Reds have the best defence in the A-League having conceded just seven times in its first nine rounds. The match was also just the second time that John Kosmina’s side has let in more than a single goal during the current campaign. At the other end of the field Adelaide’s strikers have managed to find the back of the net in every match this season and will be boosted by the return of linchpin Dario Vidosic. Vidosic has five A-League goals to his name from the opening nine rounds and trained strongly during the week after recovering from a knee injury that forced him to withdraw from the Socceroos squad and last week’s top of the table clash against the Mariners.
Melbourne Victory is the A-League’s form side, having climbed to third courtesy of four wins from the past five matches. One of the competitions glamour sides, Victory is finally starting to gel under new coach Ange Postecoglou after losing in three of the first four weeks. Only Central Coast has scored more A-league goals than Melbourne during the current campaign and has found the back of the net 11 times in its five match unbeaten run. Marco Rojas scored the winner against Perth last week and is again expected to lead the line with Archie Thompson on Socceroo duty alongside defender Mark Milligan.
These clubs did battle at Etihad Stadium on October 19, when Victory came from a goal down to score a 2-1 win. Two of the three meetings between the teams last season ended in a draw .
