An injury ravaged Newcastle United outfit will be looking to break a run of four straight Premier League defeats when it welcomes Wigan to St James’ Park on Tuesday morning (AEST). Last week’s 2-1 defeat to Stoke was the seventh game in succession that Alan Pardew’s sides had failed to win in all competitions, with a 2-1 success against West Bromwich Albion at the end of October the last time they collected three points.
The Magpies are still without Yohan Cabaye, Shola Ameobi, Steven Taylor, Hatem Ben Arfa and Gabriel Obertan who are all injured, while James Perch joins them on the sidelines through suspension. Despite its poor run of results, scoring goals has not been a problem for Newcastle, having found the back of the net in six of its past eight matches. After starting the season with a glut of goals, Demba Ba has been quiet of late and the Toon will be hoping that he can add to the tally of eight that he has already scored during the campaign.
Wigan are themselves enduring something of a lean trot, with just one victory and three defeats from its past four fixtures. The Latics weren’t disgraced in a 2-0 defeat to champion Manchester City last week however and will be confident of a bold showing against the struggling Magpies. Wigan has never beaten its opponents in seven league and cup games at St James’ Park, but has collected a draw on two of its past three trips to Tyneside. Defenders Antolin Alcaraz and Ivan Ramis, as well as midfielder Ben Watson are amongst the players unavailable through injury for manager Roberto Martinez.
The last meeting between the sides, at the DW Stadium in April, resulted in a 4-0 win for Wigan.
